Abstract

Introduction: Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines endocrine disruptors (EDCs) as „an exogenous substance or mixture that alters function(s) of the endocrine system (disrupting the hormone’s ability to bind to its intended receptor) and consequently causes adverse health effects in an organism, its offspring, or (sub)populations.” The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of timely detection of EDCs (phthalates, bisphenol A, PFAS, parabens, flame retardants, pesticides, triclosan, and dioxins) and their impact on the quality of oocytes and spermatozoa. Conclusion: Despite the restrictions on the use of EDCs in many countries, their presence has been detected in human urine, serum, amniotic fluid of pregnant women, breast milk, and sperm. The main key to defense against EDCs is timely detection as well as an adequate therapeutic approach to reduce their toxic effect..
