24 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for Windows.

Abstract

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by the degeneration of articular cartilage, surrounding bones, and other extra-articular structures. There is substantial evidence for the benefits of physical activity in osteoarthritis. The Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of comorbidities on physical and fatigue in patients suffering from degenerative rheumatism. Materials and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study that included 51 patients of both genders, aged 18-65 years, diagnosed with degenerative rheumatism and receiving treatment at the Special Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Novi Sad. All respondents signed an informed consent form and filled out a general questionnaire on socio-demographic data, which the examiner compiled. Also, all respondents completed the Fatigue Severity Scale and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Statistical processing and analysis were done using the statistical package SPSS ver. 24 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for Windows. Results: The average age of the respondents was 55.33 years, with a predominance of women (74.5%). Comorbidities are present in 64.7% of respondents, where hypertension is the most common comorbidity (58.8%). The average achieved value on the fatigue scale is 30.82±12.33, which indicates the average level of fatigue of the examined patients. Comorbidities are a statistically significant predictor of fatigue intensity (Beta=0.949, p=0.032). Of the examined comorbidities, hypertension has a statistically significant effect on the feeling of fatigue (Beta=0.890, p=0.040). More than half of the examined patients (58.8%) are at a low level of physical activity. Univariate linear regression shows that neither comorbidity nor the type of comorbidity affects the intensity of physical activity. The statistical significance of the beta coefficient is above the value of p≤0.05. Conclusion: Respondents suffering from degenerative rheumatism have hypertension as the most common comorbidity. The presence of comorbidity leads to a higher level of fatigue in patients, and the intensity of physical activity is not affected by the presence or type of comorbidity.
