Abstract
In France and around the world, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Pasteur (Louis Pasteur, 1822-1895) was celebrated. Many countries issued commemorative postage stamps with Pasteur’s portrait, numerous scientific symposia and exhibitions were held, in his birthplace Dole in France, a Catholic mass was held in the church where Pasteur himself was baptized. Less than a year after vaccinating Joseph Meister against rabies, Pasteur received in 1886 the 1st Order of St. Sava from King Milan Obrenović. Dr. Antonije Kobliška, one of the first veterinarians in Serbia, wrote in 1895 that Pasteur’s discovery of the rabies vaccine was the greatest discovery of the 19th century. Dr. Milan Jovanović Batut was personally trained by Pasteur. The first Pasteur Institute in Serbia was founded in 1900 in Niš, and after 1918 Pasteur Institutes and other preventive medical institutions were errected throughout the Kingdom of Jugoslavia. In order to continue this tradition, the Pasteur Society was founded in Novi Sad in 2008 as a citizens’ association, which was officially registered in 2010, with the aim of publishing a medical journal, promoting the Novi Sad Pasteur Institute as a cultural monument and organizing a museum of medicine. The Pasteur Society in Novi Sad marked Pasteur’s 200th birthday by holding an assembly where, in addition to Pasteur, the founder of the Pasteur Institute in Novi Sad, Dr. Adolf Hempt, was honored.
