Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy is nutritionally one of the most demanding periods in a woman's life. In pregnancy, the needs for almost all vitamins are increased. Nowadays, vitamins are widely used to improve the health of both the mother and the child during the different stages of pregnancy. More and more questions arise as to whether vitamin supplements are needed for pregnant women who do not have a clinically proven deficit in vitamins. Goals: To investigate the effect of vitamin supplements on the weight and length of newborns, as well as the impact on mother's BMI index before pregnancy and before birth. Materials and methods: The research was conducted in January and February 2019, as a prospective study at the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Clinical Center of Vojvodina in Novi Sad. The basis of the research is the analysis of data collected by the questionnaire in the form of a survey. The study included only the women who used multivitamin preparations and those who did not use vitamin supplements at all during pregnancy. All women were divided into two groups: those who used vitamin supplements and those who did not use vitamin supplements during pregnancy. Results: The analysis of the results indicates a statistically significant difference in the severity of newborn mothers who used vitamin supplementation, there was no significant effect on the length of the newborn, nor on the statistically significant change in the ratio of BMI index before pregnancy and before the birth who used vitamin supplementation in relation to mothers who did not. Conclusion: The results of the study, in comparison with the literature data, show that vitamin supplementation significantly affects the weight of the newborn.
