Abstract
Once toxocariasis is diagnosed in a patient, it is customary to proceed with anthelmintic treatment, which is usually carried out with albendazole. However, there is no unequivocal stance on how to assess the effect of the therapy and determine the further examinations that need to be carried out. We report a case of a four-and-a-half year old girl with fever, abdominal pains, slight changes in an EEG recording of temporal range activity, two instances of skin based allergic reactions and eosinophilia of 43%. Toxocariasis was diagnosed via the indirect immunofluorescence test. After two months of albendazole therapy the symptoms vanished, and the antibody titer for T. canis was reduced by 50%. The reduction in antibody titer was followed by a reduction in absolute eosinophil numbers. The patient was monitored over the course of two years. During this time, the antibody titer dropped to barely detectable levels, and the number of eosinophils normalized.
